After graduating from the University of California at Berkeley in 1951 and completing a two year apprenticeship under Carl Maston, in 1954, Kappeย established his private practice in Brentwood, California, designingย numerous custom-built houses based on modular systems.
Most of his housing projects use wood, and focus on the(typically Southern Californian mid century modern) relationship betweenย the indoor and outdoor living.
Since the beginning of his career heย focusedย on developing alternative architecturalย solutions through the use of prefabrication. Raymond Kappe is also the chairman of the Department of Architecture at California State Polytechnic University and, in 1972, founded theย Southern California Institute Architectureย (SCI-Arc).
Kappe still lives and works in LosAngeles.
