The story of the Hugh Kaptur Hideaway begins with its current owners, lifelong admirers of Mid-Century Modern architecture. They were already familiar with Hugh Kaptur’s work, but it wasn’t until they became the owners of this house that they truly understood his importance to the Coachella Valley. 

“We knew about Kaptur and his designs, but it wasn’t until we owned this house that we realised how significant his contribution to Palm Springs and Palm Desert was,” they said. Kaptur, known for his “quiet elegance” in design, was responsible for many of the region’s most iconic buildings, including the Steve McQueen house, a source of inspiration for the couple.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the house is its flawless indoor-outdoor flow. “We love being able to gaze at the pool and the lush vegetation from many of the rooms,” they shared. The home offers a serene space to relax, whether it’s by the fireplace with a vinyl record playing or outside in the fire pit area. 

The expansive lot features beautiful waterwise landscaping that shines throughout the year. Outdoor spaces such as the fire pit and outdoor den are perfect for entertaining or spending quiet afternoons by the pool.

Asked about their favorite feature of the home, the owners highlighted their newly added spa. “Its shape perfectly complements the retro vibe of the pool,” they said, noting that its organic design stands out compared to typical modern spas. Another beloved feature is the outdoor den, where guests can watch movies from the pool, providing an immersive experience unique to the house.

The couple’s connection to the house was immediate. They had read about the restoration by Chris Salay Design but had put it out of their minds. During a weekend trip to the desert, they stopped by an open house and were instantly captivated by the peace and simplicity the home evoked. 

“We knew this house was for us as soon as we stepped inside,” they recalled. The house offered a perfect mix of retro charm and modern functionality, feeling both timeless and up-to-date. Its central location made it even more appealing, providing easy access to shopping, dining, and recreation.

The owners believe the house has a distinct personality, a balance between mid-century aesthetics and modern living. “It’s not stuck in the past,” they emphasised. “This house is meant to be lived in and enjoyed.” Many mid-century homes have lost their charm due to poor restorations, but this one maintains its spirit. “It feels special but not precious,” they said, and that sense of ease is something that every guest notices during their stay.

The three bedrooms provide a comfortable retreat, with two opening onto private patios. The primary suite includes a lanai, ideal for quiet moments. The bathrooms, modernised with fixtures from Hansgrohe and Dornbracht, blend luxury with practicality. 

The living areas are furnished with a mix of vintage and modern pieces, including George Nelson’s CSS shelving system and George Mulhauser’s Plycraft chair. Guests can enjoy dining with a full set of original Arabia of Finland Rosmarin dishes, adding a touch of mid-century flair to every meal.

The outdoor area is an entertainer’s dream, featuring a lush, private oasis complete with seating, a retro-shaped spa, a fire pit, and a Mont Alpi BBQ grill. Whether relaxing by the pool or watching movies in the shaded cabana, the outdoor space offers the perfect balance of comfort and entertainment.
