Chet Architecture has taken a thoughtful approach to restoring and reimagining a classic mid-century ranch house in Los Feliz, Los Angeles. Rather than leaning on retro aesthetics or recreating a past era, the studio focused on balancing history with modern comfort. The result is a space designed for entertaining, where the glamour of mid-century Hollywood meets the conveniences of contemporary living.

The home, built around 1959, is located in a historic neighborhood known for its deep ties to Hollywood and the Los Angeles music scene. “This house spoke to a generation obsessed with crooners, Hollywood thrill-seekers, and sexy advertising campaigns,” the architects explain. “We love the history of this early Los Angeles neighborhood and the creatives who have lived and continue to live here.”

A Home Designed for Entertaining

The homeowners had one main request: they wanted a space that made entertaining effortless. They had been living in the house for some time and wanted to enhance its functionality while maintaining its original charm. “They love to entertain a close-knit group of friends and were looking to add some conveniences and a little luxury to their daily life,” Chet Architecture shares.

To achieve this, the design team avoided predictable mid-century recreations, instead using contemporary materials that honored the home’s era without mimicking it. “We love mid-century architecture. We celebrate the ethos of the time period, but we are not interested in mimicking the materials and popularized color schemes of the time,” they explain. “We take a gentle approach to renovating historic spaces to let the historical elements mix with contemporary improvements.”

Thoughtful Materials and Design

A key part of the redesign was the selection of materials that enhanced the home’s mid-century essence while creating a refined and modern atmosphere. “We used poured-in-place terrazzo, vibrant velvet upholstery, brass fixtures, and walnut-clad walls and cabinetry,” the architects note. The combination allows for a setting that works equally well for a summer poolside gathering or a moody evening jazz performance.

The balance between original and modern elements was carefully considered. “We think what you don’t do to a space is as important as what you do,” the architects explain. The home’s original character was preserved while new features were introduced with subtlety, ensuring the space felt elevated rather than drastically altered.

One of the most significant changes was to the primary suite, which was previously a dimly lit and unremarkable space. The team introduced a large picture window and a series of walnut-clad skylights, bringing in natural light and creating a warm, calming ambiance. “It evokes the warm glamour of mid-century design infused with the amenities of a modern-day high-end hotel suite or spa,” they say.

The homeowners trusted Chet Architecture to guide the renovation, allowing for a collaborative and seamless process. “They wanted to elevate the space and they wanted it to feel like the mid-century gem it was, just more chic,” the architects explain. Their vision was clear: to create a home that retained its mid-century soul while feeling sophisticated and ready for entertaining.

The success of this renovation lies in its ability to merge history with modern luxury. By carefully layering contemporary elements onto the home’s original character, Chet Architecture created a space that feels both timeless and fresh. “Clients are the heart of our work,” they emphasize. “Their interests guide our process and help us inform the program, the materials, and the overall vibe of the space.”
